Microbiome Skincare: The Probiotic Debate!

As ironic as it may sound to a consumer, there is such a thing as "good bacteria", Pre-, Post- and Probiotics have a bevy full of benefits for skin. Just like our "gut", our skin has its' own Microbiome, which are microorganisms that live on the surface of the skin, like live bacteria, fungi & even viruses, may sound very gross & disgusting however what it does keep our skin healthy. Think of it as boosting your skin's immunity. It works in the sense of protecting & to keep our skin's barrier functioning normally. What throws our skin off-balance are harsh ingredients on the skin, environmental factors, harsh scrubbing & other particular factors could contribute to conditions that are affected that disturbs the microbiome. Such as Eczema, Roseacea, Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis and even Acne. First thing to do is to have a gentle skincare regimen... making sure you use a pH-balanced & sulfate-free cleanser and making sure your products are alcohol-free, make sure your cleansers are soap-free as well, that's just the start with having healthy & glowing skin.
A healthy microbiome is meant to fight off infection, keep your skin properly hydrated as well as protect against environmental damage. Good bacteria triumphs over the bad kind of bacteria. The most common ingredients used in moisturizers/serums are Lactobacillus and Bifidabacterium (there are a few others as well but these seem to be the most popularized ingrddients), they help as tools to act as anti-inflammatory, for very sensitized and reddened skin and with those skin conditions as previously mentioned. Probiotic technology works great with individuals whom are also concerned with signs of aging as well, simply it's meant for skin to become healthier, much more hydrated and dewy-looking, mix pre-, post- and probiotics with like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, peptides, ceramides or even like aloe to help further reduce inflammation. It makes for a powerhouse of ingredients. Youthful-looking skin is generally healthy skin. However, these ingredients tend to work very well with individuals who suffer from inflammation & redness, which is amazing for sensitive skin all while restoring the skin's natural pH level. Even with ones who are who don't have super sensitive skin, our skin can become sensitized in different points of our lives due to different contributing factors. Plenty of brands having been most recently coming out with their Microbiime skincare products. I certainly don't believe it's just a trend. I think there is a lot of merit to Microbiome science and how it does generally affect the skin.
I do believe it's worth to see if these products will help especially if you have very reactive skin & to make it stronger and to stabilize the skin barrier, ultimately making it healthy & vibrant. It will help  to "toughen" and strengthen it. As far exfoliation goes, you have to be pretty gentle, most sensitive skin users only require exfoliation just once per week, a gentle scrub with a light hand, a cleansing brush and/or Lactic acid for chemical exfoliation. If you do have a skin condition, I would definitely consult with a Dermatologist to see if it would be appropriate for you or not. Your dermatologist will guide through the right skincare routine path when struggling with issues of rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis. Calm & gentle is the way!

Yours truly always,
